"Introduction to tapestry"
Tapesty is one of the names given to a form of embroidery worked on canvas.  It is also known as canvaswork, needlework tapestry and needlepoint.
Strictly speaking the term tapestry refers to a weaving process, but tapestry as we know it probably evolved in the early nineteenth century in Europe when the first pattern charts for working with wool on canvas were produced.
Woven tapestries were expensive to buy and the new patterns attempted to reproduce their effect so that needlewomen could make their own 'tapestries'.
